Scholarships, Grants, and Financial Aid

Scholarships

All first-year Schreyer Scholars receive an Academic Excellence Scholarship of $3,500 per year, renewable for a total of eight semesters.

In recent years, the Schreyer Honors College, through the generous philanthropy of individual donors, has been able to award to first-year Scholars a select number of $5,000, $7,500, $10,000 and $25,000 scholarships, renewable for up to four years. Selection is based upon an individual’s application to the Schreyer Honors College and an interview conducted by either an Honors College administrator or a member of the college’s External Advisory Board.

For all scholarships provided by the Schreyer Honors College, renewal after the first year of study requires that the Scholar remain in good academic standing and fulfill all requirements of the Schreyer Honors College.

In addition to scholarships, many Scholars receive merit awards from their academic colleges at Penn State.

Schreyer Ambassador Travel Grants

Argentina. Bangladesh. Namibia. China. Taiwan. These are just a handful of the more than 40 countries that Schreyer Scholars will have visited this academic year—all part of our students’ experiences in “building a global perspective,” one of the pillars of the Schreyer Honors College’s mission.

But building that global perspective on an individual basis can be an expensive proposition in this global economy. That’s where the Schreyer Ambassador Travel Grants can make international travel for scholarship, service, and research an affordable opportunity for our Scholars. Awarded three times a year for each upcoming semester (summer, fall, spring), travel grants offset transportation costs to destinations around the globe. For the 2007-08 academic year, more than 250 grants totaling nearly $175,000 will be awarded.

Summer Internship and Research Grants

Spending a summer drafting federal policy in Washington, D.C., or promoting a new release for a Madison Avenue publisher, or conducting research in a renowned medical lab are high-profile opportunities that get the attention of future employers and graduate programs. But, often, these internships don’t offer much financial compensation, especially considering the costs associated with living in a metropolitan area.

That’s where the Schreyer Honors College’s summer internship and summer research grants can help.

Schreyer Scholars apply for these grants, which are typically awarded during the spring semester. For summer 2007, nearly 60 grants totally more than $60,000 were awarded.
